Abstract

To understand the evolution of the frequency of occurrence of the predominant weeds at the Arquímedes Colina Sugar Company during the period 2015-2022 and to characterize its flora associated with sugarcane cultivation during the analyzed period, data obtained from the annual weed surveys were used. Nineteen weed species are present at the study site, belonging to seven botanical families, of which 13 correspond to the class Liliatae (monocotyledons), represented by two families: Cyperaceae and Poaceae; and six species belong to the class Magnoliatae (dicotyledons). The presence of 16 genera was noted, with only Brachiaria exhibiting more than one species. Of the species present in the sugarcane planted area, 11 have an annual life cycle and eight are perennial. Four species were reported with the greatest coverage in the evaluated fields, listed in descending order as: Dichanthium annulatum (Forsk.) Stapt, Rottboellia cochinchinensis (L.) (Lour.) Clayton, Brachiaria mutica (Forsk.) Stapfz, and Mucuna pruriens (L.). These same species remained present throughout the analyzed period in all production units and were considered dominant due to their high frequency of occurrence in the sugarcane fields. Furthermore, these four economically important weeds, which are difficult to control, show a trend toward increasing frequency of occurrence when comparing 2015 to 2022, resulting in higher percentages of sugarcane infestation.
