Abstract

In the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico, farmers produce plants, animals and fungi in both traditional agroecosystems called milpa and highly mechanized agricultural systems. In Mexico there is a belief that highly mechanized agricultural systems are the most efficient since they have high yields of agricultural products. For this reason, an energetic analysis of both agroecosystems was carried out in order to identify and quantify the energy consumed, and the generation of greenhouse gas emissions. The information was obtained through surveys and data collection in the field. The results showed that the milpa has an energy use efficiency of 5.334 and the mechanized system of 1.347. Regarding the specific emission of greenhouse gases, the mechanized system emitted 38 953 kg COS2eq/ha and the milpa 13 635,862 kg CO2eq/ha.
