Abstract

Approximately 70% of global freshwater consumption is used for agriculture. In particular, the largest amount of extracted groundwater is intended to this activity. The major cost component in the water production of groundwater supply system (once the wells are built) is pumping water from wells. In this contribution, groundwater management model MADA is applied in Cuenca Sur aquifer, to obtain the optimal operation cost from 19 pumping well of the aqueduct. MADA use the response matrix approach to link the simulation model (AQÜIMPE) with a quadratic programming problem, which is solved using the function quadprog of the mathematical assistant MATLAB. The exploitation management is performed in transient during a year, where it is considering a recharge from a precipitation of 75% of probability, a set of constraints of water demand, installed capacity and dynamic levels in each operating well must be guaranteed. The optimal system operation scheme obtained has great practical value for the authorities responsible for managing this important source.
