Abstract

In Cuba, about 95.0 % of the power generation comes from fossil fuels. That’s why it is desirable to invest in environmental-friendly energy sources in order to reduce the dependence of oil and greenhouse gas emissions. The Isle of Youth belongs to the Cuban territory, but it is geographically separated. Therefore, it has its own electric system that demands day-to-day shipping of oil from the mainland. The wind potential of the island is low, with an average speed of 3.5 m/s. In Cuba there are just a few previous works to assess the feasibility of the use of small wind turbines to generate electricity. In this study, it is evaluated the technical-economic feasibility of the use of the 5.0 kW Zefir D7-P5 wind turbine, as the best option among 7 different small wind turbines of 5.0 kW compared. The aim is to supply the energy demand of 22 houses (average 180.0 kWh/month) in San Pedro community. The wind speed collected data at 20.0 m height is fitted in the Weibull distribution function. The results show an annual energy production of 9.56 MWh and a Levelized Cost of Energy of 0.53 US$/kWh. Also it is possible to save 96.1 barrels of crude oil and 47.5 t CO2 in a year by its implementation.
