Abstract

A simplex-centroid design, followed by a responses analysis using the response surface methodology (RSM) and the multiple responses optimization (MRO) were used for the maximization of methane production and percentage volatile solid removal (% VS removal) on the anaerobic co-digestion of three different substrates: coffee wastewater (CW), cattle manure (CM) and pig manure (PM). Response surface analysis were investigated in accordance with the responses selected, and showed that the best mathematical models were quadratic (R2 = 97.3%) and special cubic (R2 = 93.2%), respectively. MRO showed that the optimum mixture, coffee wastewater = 39% and pig manure = 61%, achieved a high D function value (87.3%). At these conditions, high values of methane production of 1.09 L methane L-1 d-1 and % VS removal of 80.5% were predicted.
